Baby R was one of the smallest babies we have photographed yet. Weighing in at just around 6 pounds at his photo session, he was the perfect little model. Photographer Sam was able to do just about every pose possible with this sleeping angel. Not to mention Mom and Dad had plenty of ideas of their own! It's so fun to photograph these little bundles of joy, especially when the new parents incorporate some of their own props (and body parts) to make it more personal. We can't wait until his three month session!

Benedetto and Josephine - Italian Amore! {Engagement}

When Sammi and I first met Josephine, we instantly fell in love with her. She is so incredibly sweet and kind and just seems to light up a room when she walks in. Born and raised in Italy, we could listen to her charming italian accent for hours. And we did during her consultation session. Benedetto aka Bene (Benny) is her fiance and we didn't get a chance to meet him until the engagement session. The reason for this is that he is still living and working in Italy and won't be moving to the U.S. until shortly before the wedding. I had the opportunity to photograph their engagement session while he was here for the holidays and let me just tell you, Josephine's charm is magnified by 100 when Bene is by her side. We had a wonderful time in downtown Plymouth on a sunny winter day. We started with some coffee to warm up (pun intended) and took to the streets to take advantage of all that Plymouth has to offer. Mitchell and Katey - A love Story {Wedding} - Bloomfield Hills, MI

I fell head over heels in love with this couple during their engagement session. But my connection with Katey, the bride, came when we first met at a bridal show. I remember her and her family coming to my booth to chat with us. Instantly we both knew that we were going to be friends. She booked right then and there and I will never forget what happened next. As soon as the agreement was signed. Her whole family huddled together and started to jump and scream with excitement. I have to tell you, that was one of the coolest moments of my job so far.

We went to Detroit for their engagement session and had so much fun that we hung out and grabbed a drink afterwards at the Motor City Brewery (where Mitch and Katey had their first "date"). After that day, I couldn't wait to photograph their wedding. Just the idea of meeting the families of these two incredible people filled me with joy. The wedding day came and went (too fast in my opinion) and now we are left with these incredible memories through the media of photography.

Tiffany and Eric are one of the sweetest couples I have had a chance to work with. They are all smiles and totally in love. I had the opportunity to do their engagement session at Tiffany's parents house near Frankenmuth. It was set on a beautiful lot of land and I could have photographed them in this location for days. During their session we got to chat a lot and know eachother more, which is one of my favorite things about doing engagement sessions. Eric informed me that they were moving to New York the following week for his job (He works for Facebook!!) Talk about a sudden change! I first met Trisha when I photographed her cousin Amy's wedding last year. She was so sweet and smiley that I just knew she would be an amazing bride. When she asked me to photograph her wedding, of course I was delighted! Trisha and Aaron are very active in their church community so it was only right that they exchange vows there too. The Clarkston Community Church made a beautiful location for these two. After the wedding we went to Depot Park for some fun in the (somewhat) sun before heading to the reception. This Group of people was hilarious and kept Sammi and I on our toes the entire time. I absolutely love photographing at the Lafayette Grand. Not only are the staff so wonderful to work with, but the endless amount of areas to steal great photographs makes me happy. I just love the staircase and get very excited to use it every time Im there!!

17 Tips for Perfect Pictures by "The Knot" - Wedding Photographer Metro Detroit

I found this article in a recent issue of "The Knot Michigan" and totally agree with this. For any of you who don't know where to begin with finding the right photographer, here are 17 tips that may help you get started:

1. Hire a Professional - Make sure you hire a professional with an education in photography. An inexperienced photographer may not know what to do if the clouds break while you are walking down the isle. You need someone with training who can think quickly on their feet.

2. Book your Photographer ASAP - Good photographers book a year or more in advance and many of them can only shoot one wedding a day. If you find one you want, book them!

3. Make Room in the Budget - Sometimes couples choose a photographer solely because it fits into their budget. But you should view your photos as an investment and be willing to spend a bit of money on them. Keep in mind these photos are all that's left after the big day. They will last a lifetime so you want them to look good. Remember: you will get what you pay for.

4. Be Wary of Trends - Images should stand the test of time. Some things may be in style now but be sure to have a photographer who can capture the timeless images as well as what's in style now.

5. Spring for a Second Shooter - Sometimes a couple wants to save money or feels that it's too obstructive for more than one photographer to be present. But consider this: the second photographer offers another unique eye throughout the day and can capture moments that aren't on the list for your primary photographer.

6. Have an Engagement Session - Some couples skip their engagement session because they don't think its necessary or consider it a fading trend. But the real value in the shoot isn't always the resulting images; it's a great opportunity to get to know your photographer and to all her to get to know you. It's also great practice to get you and your groom feeling more at ease in front of the camera.

7. Heed your Shot List - The biggest mistake couples make is not sticking to their shot list (if they made one). So many times, at the wedding, the bride gets caught up in the day and says she doesn't need a particular shot. But after the wedding, regret sets in. Take the time to get the shots you want because this is the only opportunity you will have!

8. Schedule an Extra Day - Go over the day's schedule with your photographer. If you want to shoot in multiple locations but don't have the time allowed in the day, it may be best to schedule a second session. This is a good idea if you are traveling too. Scheduling a second day will also allow you to enjoy the actual day a little bit more.

9. Scout your Shot Spots - Be familiar with the area around your wedding. There may be some very romantic spots you wouldn't have seen without a visit. If you do want a particular spot, be sure to be informed of whether there will be a function going on that day. Also, you may want to check to see if there are restrictions or permit fees involved.

10. Get some Photos out of the Way - Have a first look session with your groom before the ceremony. The day becomes so hectic that you may not have time to really enjoy each others company otherwise. Having the first look session will not only give you time together but will be a way to capture some true emotions without the nerves of an audience.

11. Communicate Your Plan - Create a list that details when and where portraits will take place and who needs to be there. This is particularly important for family photos. So many times a family member will leave the ceremony site and miss out on being part of a family portrait because they weren't informed. You also don't want to waste anytime tracking down Uncle Bob!

12. Build some Extra Time - Most couples underestimate how long everything takes. Pad your schedule with a little extra time and maybe you'll get a moment to take a breather!

13. Keep your Head Up - Everyone should smile as they walk down the aisle. Or at the very least, look straight ahead.

14. Don't Always Look at the Camera - Photo journalistic shots are some of the best shots a photographer can take. Trust them and let them tell you when you should be looking at the camera.

15. Smile - but not too much - Just be natural. Your happiness will show through your genuine smile.

16. Lighten Up - Beware of dimming the lights in your reception venue too much. Understanding mood needs to be Set, but no matter how good a camera is, the lens will always have a tough time focusing and zooming in poor lighting. Tell your photographer about your lighting ahead of time.

17. Get some Hard Copies - It might be more expensive to print through your photographer but the quality will be far superior to what you can done your own with the files.

He liked it so he put a ring on it... CONGRATULATIONS! Now let the fun begin. Here are just a few tips to help you get on the track to planning your perfect day.

1. Set the date! This is the question most vendors will ask. Some, Vision included, only book one wedding per day so it is very important to know whether or not they are available on your day. Another important step is to pick the venue. Sometimes your initial date will not be available and you may have to make a switch. This could lead to complications if you have to try and switch the date with other vendors as well.

2. Establish a budget. **Important** When establishing a budget, don't necessarily attach a dollar amount to each aspect of the wedding but more so an order of importance. Example... if photography and videography are most important to you, they would be first on your budget. If cake isn't as important, that would be further down. This helps give you a little wiggle room. Perhaps you find a great deal on a cake, great! Now you can add more to something else!

3. Attend a bridal show. There are some great deals at these shows. A lot of vendors don't want to take the time to market themselves or do follow up so they offer FABULOUS deals if you book at the show. Many vendors will do raffles as well. We will be at Bridal Celebrations show at the Palace of Auburn Hills this Sunday. Come say hi!!

The most important tip I can give you is..... DON'T WORRY ABOUT MAKING EVERYONE ELSE HAPPY. This day is for you and your fiance. Other people will give you their input and some feelings may be hurt but this day is special for you. Just keep telling yourself that.

Hello everyone. This is step one in achieving my new years resolution. I have neglected this blog for too long and it doesn't deserve to be treated this way. 2011 is the year that my blog will be full of both useless and useful information.

Lets start today.

There are so many things that I can write about including everything we are doing to keep busy but today I am going to tell you a little about me.

My name is Jenay Dawson and I am the owner/operator of Vision Photography, LLC. I am a huge fan of many things one of which is gossip magazines... specifically US Weekly. One thing they do is 25 random facts about celebrities. By no means am I trying to classify myself that way but here are 15 (Im not interesting enough for 25) facts you may or may not know about me.

1. I have a black lab mix named Miller and he is the love of my life.

2. I have been working in photography since the age of 16 - starting at http://www.blogger.com/www.uniqueimagestudio.com.

3. My fear for thunderstorms is just now starting to subside.

4. Music truly is one of the most important components of my life.

5. I have an interesting family... 1 full sister, 1 step brother, 2 half sisters and 1 half brother. My Mom and Dad are both remarried so I have four parents as well.

6. My degree is in Public Relations and Marketing from Central Michigan University.

7. I studied photography in college. In Rome. Best experience of my life.

8. Wizard of Oz and Christmas time are slight obsessions of mine.

9. I am horribly unorganized. It's always a new years resolution of mine to change that but I loose my list half way through January and forget what my resolutions are.

10. Taco Bell is one of my weaknesses

11. Mondays are my favorite day of the week because I spend many of them with my niece Elle.

12. Garden State is one of my favorite movies.. mainly because of the soundtrack.

13. My Mom lives in St. Croix and I miss her terribly everyday but it sure does make for a nice place to visit!

14. My boyfriend keeps me sane (most of the time).

15. I hate crab legs and lobster.

One of my favorite things about my job is being able to meet great people. Chris and Jessy definately file into my great people cabinet. There is soooo much love between the two of them that it fills the room just with their presence. They have such a fun story. If you are looking at these pictures, you are probably questioning the flashlight picture. Let me just fill you in. When they found out they were pregnant, they decided to wait a little bit to tell people. But the excitement between the two of them was too much to handle. They wanted to be able to talk to eachother about this little peanut. One night while sitting at home, they decided to come up with a code name for the baby. It needed to be subtle, so they decided a household product would do the trick. Looking around the house brought them upon a flashlight sitting on a shelf. Alas, the nickname flashlight begun! Without knowning the sex of the baby, the nickname decided to stick around until Stella was born. Thats right, they had a girl! I will be posting her newborn session soon.

Renee and Travis "Tie the Knot" - Novi, MI

Travis and Renee met while attending Western Michigan University. Although my alma mater is Central Michigan University, I still think they are pretty great people ;o) The morning started off without a hitch as Renee and her girls got ready at the Comfort Inn in Novi, MI. With Travis and his guys on the floor above, the couple succeeded in not seeing eachother until their special moment before pictures. We had soooo much fun with this group as we went around downtown Northville. I have to admit, everyone was a trooper as we fought the heat to get all the fun shots we did downtown. As we finished, everyone headed back to the hotel to spruce up before the ceremony. During the ceremony, Renee and Travis took part in a very cool tradition and actually tied the knot. They made promises and vows to eachother and with each promise, a new rope was laid across their hands. When the promises were complete, a knot was tied with the ropes and made for a great keepsake for the two of them. The reception was absolutely beautiful with the purple, gold and peacock theme throughout. Masters of Ceremony was a great dj company I had the opportunity to work with and kept the crowd going all night. Everyone danced straight through the tornado warnings! Congrats Travis and Renee! Im so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with you and your friends and family.

Danielle and Jason say "I Do" - Waterford, MI

Danielle and Jason are a sassy couple who planned a very "sweet" wedding. Their wedding started at the United Methodist Church in Waterford where friends and family gathered as they exchanged vows. Danielle - a spunky little bride wore a beautiful gown and probably my favorite pair of shoes so far this year! My favorite part of their wedding day was the weather. As the weather channel stated, it was supposed to rain off and on all day. Fortunately, the weather held off for the majority of the day. The only time it rained was when we went to visit the grave site of the Bride's grandmother. Whether or not you are a believer in afterlife, this had to at least make you question. As soon as we got to the cemetery, it started to sprinkle. As we approached the grave site, it rained a little more. Everyone told Danielle not to get out of the limo but she insisted on visiting her grandmother. We ran out there with umbrellas and took a picture of the bride, her sister and her cousin at their grandmothers grave site. As soon as we got into the limo again, the clouds parted ways and it was beautiful the rest of the day. I truly believe the rain was Danielle's grandmother's way of saying she was there and giving her some of that good luck rain on her wedding day. The night continued at the Pine Knob Carriage House in Clarkston where the Sweets theme helped decorate the beautiful venue. The couple danced the night away before their honeymoon the next day. Congrats Jason and Danielle. I am truly honored that you allowed me to be a part of your special day!

She may be one of the happiest babies ever! Baby Saige just turned one year old so of course we had to capture this time of her life! With Mom Cheri being an avid gardener, we spent a little while roaming around her backyard for some of the most colorful backgrounds mother nature can provide. Erin and Tommy are funloving musicians. As soon as I saw the outfits, I thought to myself, this session is going to "Rock!" The couple met on St. Patty's Day at a pub in detroit so it was only suiting to go back there for the engagement session! Erin told me the thing that attracted her most to Tommy was his mohawk. He no longer has the hawk but still brought the rocker feel with his suspenders and hat. I had such a fun time with these two and can only hope that Erin got to soak her feet after all the walking she did in her sassy shoes! Can't wait til the wedding guys!

This silly fun loving couple and I ventured up to Mt. Pleasant where they first met. We went to the park, back in the woods, on campus and even to the bar where they first laid eyes on eachother. Surprise! - Event Photographer, Waterford, MI

Michelle thought she was going out to celebrate her birthday with a few friends, but her daughter, Alexis, had something else in mind. Over 50 people attended Michelle's surprise birthday party including her parents and other relatives who flew in from out of town to join the fun. As Michelle was being driven around town with a blindfold on, guests gathered around to greet her at the door for the big surprise. Her expression when the blindfold was removed can only be best described by the images taken of her reaction. I don't think there was a dry eye in the room as she became aware of the event which had been planned in her honor. The party was great and I was able to hear so many fun stories of all the people in her life. Happy Birthday Michelle!

Miss O is one of my favorite little girls to photograph. Besides her awe inspiring story of being born premature and fighting her way from 1 lb up to where she is now, she has personality for days! Whenever she comes in to be photographed, I know she will light up the camera with her smiles :o)

With all of the hustle and bustle of a newborn being brought into the world, sometimes new parents don't realize how much the little ones change. Or how quickly they do it! Newborn photography is best done within the first two weeks of the baby's birth. To achieve the true beauty of this session, I will come to your home where the child is most comfortable. Sleeping baby is my best (and possibly favorite) subject!

Here is baby C. He was brought into this world on January 25th by new first time parents Angela and Dennis. There is so much love in their home for this little guy. At a little under 7 pounds, Baby C was awake and alert most of the time! I did capture a few of his sleeping moments though. Congrats Angie and Dennis on your little one!

Megan and Matt Scottsdale AZ (Destination Wedding Photographer)

I was given the wonderful opportunity to photograph the beautiful Megan and her amazing husband Matt. The couple met when Megan packed her bags, leaving her family in Michigan to see what else the world had to offer - boy did she win! She moved to Arizona looking for a fresh start and met her best friend. My favorite part of their engagement story was the fact that Matt proposed to Meg with an engraved bracelet. The ring was ordered but Matt couldn't wait any longer to request her hand in marriage.

The wedding was beautiful. As a photographer, I couldn't have asked for a better setting. With Camelback Mountain as the background, this couple said their "I Do's" as the sun romantically set beside them. They danced the night away with a live band, great friends and family and a great staff at the Camelback Inn Marriott.
